When the Sky Came Alive | Northern Lights Over Missouri (Oct 10, 2024)
The Northern Lights Captured Over Fellows Lake In Springfield Missouri
On the night of October 10, 2024, something truly extraordinary filled the sky.
The Aurora Borealis—normally seen far to the north—made a rare and powerful appearance deep into the southern United States.
Standing beside Fellows Lake, I watched in awe as the sky came alive.
Waves of pink, red, green, and purple danced overhead, shifting and flowing like something out of a dream. Their colors reflected across the calm water below, creating a scene that felt almost unreal.
This wasn’t just a moment captured through a camera lens.
For the first time, the Northern Lights were clearly visible with my own eyes—moving, glowing, and changing right in front of me. A rare geomagnetic storm pushed the KP index to an incredible 8.67, allowing the aurora to be seen as far south as Florida.
Even a passing plane left a streak of light through the sky, a quiet reminder of how rare and fleeting this moment truly was.
It was a busy weeknight, but I’m so grateful we decided to go out.
This was only the second time I’ve ever witnessed the Northern Lights—and the first time they revealed themselves so vividly without needing a camera to see them.
This timelapse captures more than just the movement of the sky.
It preserves a moment of wonder, stillness, and pure amazement—one I know I’ll never forget.
