The Famous Forrest Gump Point In Utah
Where Movie History Meets Monument Valley
You've most likely seen the popular movie Forrest Gump starring Tom Hanks, but did you know one of the most memorable moments from the film was captured on a quiet stretch of highway just outside Monument Valley?
Located along U.S. Highway 163 near Mexican Hat, Utah, this iconic viewpoint sits just north of the Arizona state line and offers one of the most recognizable views in the American Southwest. In the movie, around mile marker 13, Forrest finally stops running after years of traveling across the country and tells his followers, “I’m pretty tired. I think I’ll go home now.”
Standing in this exact location, you can see the famous Mittens and towering butte formations of Monument Valley in the distance. While many visitors come here because of the movie, the view itself is what makes this place unforgettable. The long, open highway stretching toward the red rock formations creates a scene that feels timeless and is a dream location for photographers.
If you plan to visit Forrest Gump Point, be careful while driving through this area. Many travelers stop along the road to capture their own photo, and it’s common to see people standing in the middle of the highway. Always watch for traffic and take extra precautions while enjoying this incredible view.
We were there during the evening on our way from Capitol Reef National Park to Monument Valley. While standing along the road, you will be looking southwest towards the main viewpoint so during sunset, you'll be facing the sun with it a little on the right. In the morning for sunrise, it will be coming up beside you and should give you good side light on the buttes.
If you haven't been and are planning a trip to this area, I highly recommend checking it out.
