The Famous Horseshoe Bend At Sunrise
Discovering the Beauty of Horseshoe Bend as Dawn Breaks
One of the things I was excited about for our trip to the Page Arizona area, was going to see Horseshoe Bend. You've probably seen photos of it as it's probably one of the most photographed spots in the American Southwest.
It's actually a popular spot for sunset because when facing the famous canyon and Colorado River, you are facing the sunset as it drops below the horizon, but I opted to see it for sunrise which comes up behind you. I made this decision because of it's popularity and it is more crowded for sunset. We instead did our sunset that night at White Pocket which you can see my photos for those here: https://5-jennifer-white.pixels.com/art/white+pocket. I'm still working on those photos at the time of writing this article but will get an article and video done on it too as soon as I get through the photos.
When it comes to sunrise, be sure to check what time they open the gate. I was disappointed I didn't get to get any dark twilight photos because they didn't open the gate until 30 mins before sunrise. It's about a 20-30 minute hike depending on your pace, so when they did finally open the gate, it was a mad dash to park and hike to get there in time.
There is a fee to get in the park. It is not covered by the National Park "America The Beautiful" Pass. At the time we went it was $10 per car, $5 per bike (2025). You'll want to check to see if the fees have changed.
The first panorama photo you see above shows how much light was already in the sky at the time we started the hike which as you can see blue hour was starting to come to an end.
The 1.5 mile round trip hiking trail offers beautiful expansive views of the desert. It's an easy trail with nice small gravel as you can see in the photos below. They do offer restrooms in the parking lot. Be sure to bring water too! Especially if you are hiking in the middle of the day. This would also be a great spot for a picnic, just be sure to take your trash back with you.
Every once in a while along the trail you'll see a cool log fence along the pathway that I think adds great character to the views. They also have a couple of seating area's along the path with a small roof that I am sure helps on those hot summer days.
In the photo below looking just over the fence, you get your first glimpse of the canyon ahead.
With as large as it is, it amazes me how you really don't get a good view of the entrenched meander where the river cuts through until you get right up on it.
Once you reach it...the view will take your breath away!
Even with the mad dash to reach it in time, I was still able to get somewhat of a blue hour photo as you can see above. I was hoping for more twilight with the stars.
The main overlook area has railing to protect you from the 1,000 foot drop off. If you have kids, I recommend staying in that area. You can walk around in areas with no railing, but do be careful, especially if the sandstone rock is wet as it can get slippery. Be sure to have good shoes. Sadly there have been some deadly falls there.
Perched high above the Colorado River, Horseshoe Bend is one of the most recognizable landscapes in the American Southwest. This dramatic overlook features a stunning horseshoe-shaped curve in the river that wraps around a towering sandstone butte.
When the first light of day starts, it gradually illuminates the canyon walls and casts warm golden hues across the sandstone cliffs. As I mentioned earlier, sunrise is a quieter and more peaceful experience compared to the crowds that gather later in the day. As the sun rises, the changing light creates a stunning display of colors and shadows, making it a favorite destination for photographers and nature lovers alike.
Don't forget to turn around and view the beautiful sunrise as it comes up over the horizon! I was able to capture the above photo with a sunburst of rays as it came up.
Bring your binoculars to look down into the canyon. It was cool to see the parked, campers, kayaks, and canoes along the riverbank. There are float trips you can take to that will take you through the canyon down below. You can also see boats floating through too.
Be sure to stick around long enough to watch the canyon begin to glow!
They say the average person will spend 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours there including the hike there and back. We spent a good 2 to 2 1/2 hours there. I took the time to capture a few more photos on our hike back.
From the peaceful morning atmosphere and glowing canyon walls to the incredible view of the Colorado River winding far below, sunrise offers an unforgettable way to experience this iconic landscape. Whether you're visiting for the first time or returning to see it again, Horseshoe Bend is a place that inspires awe and reminds us of the incredible beauty waiting to be discovered in the American Southwest.
Below is a video I took of the hike and sunrise for you to.
