The Best Kept Secret in South Dakota? (World Fossil Finder Museum)
A surpise gem that is a must visit in the Black Hills.
This was a surpise gem in Hot Springs, South Dakota that I had to share. Even though I didn't take any professional photos, this wonderful World Fossil Finder Museum is worth the mention.
They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, and during our May 2026 trip to the southern Black Hills, we stumbled upon a place that proved that saying true in the best way possible.
Nestled in the historic town of Hot Springs, South Dakota, the World Fossil Finder Museum might look modest from the street, but the moment you step through the doors, you are transported into the ancient past.
Inside the Collection: Ancient Wonders & Lifelong Passion
The museum is a non-profit educational institution founded by Frank and Deborah Garcia. Frank, an amateur paleontologist with decades of experience, has assembled a truly extraordinary private collection featuring both local discoveries and incredible unique specimens from around the globe.

From prehistoric skeletons to detailed marine and plant fossils, every display holds a story. What makes the museum stand out isn’t just the rarity of the finds, but the palpable passion behind them. We had the pleasure of meeting Frank and the director, Amanda, and their warmth and generosity made our visit unforgettable. They are truly some of the kindest people we met on our journey. My husband could have talked to Frank all day!
Exploring the Sandstone City: Downtown Hot Springs
After immersing ourselves in ancient history, we took a short, scenic drive through downtown Hot Springs. Even under a steady rain, the town’s character was unmistakable.
With a population of around 3,400, Hot Springs feels intimate yet grand. Known as the "Sandstone City," its streets are lined with gorgeous, historic pink sandstone architecture, all set against the backdrop of natural thermal waters. It was a cozy, atmospheric drive that perfectly rounded out our day. I wish we would have planned more time in that area so be sure to allow time for it. Next time we pass by the area, we plan to spend more time there to explore the sites.
